OUR HISTORY

The Ukrainian Music Institute of America, Inc. (UMI) is the largest and longest lived professional, non-profit music school of the Ukrainian diaspora. Founded in 1952 in New York, the Institute at various times spread to 23 cities in the US. This network of UMI branches was based on the Lysenko Advanced Music Institute in Lviv and satellite cities, where UMI’s original faculty taught during the 1930’s. Their names are a litany of outstanding musicians in the Ukrainian diaspora of the 20th century.

Pianist and educator Roman Sawycky, Sr. was UMI’s co-founder, organizer and first director and inspector of schools. The following became subsequent presidents: composers and musicologists I. Sonevytsky, Z. Lysko, pianists-teachers D. Hordynska-Karanowycz (3), M. Baylova, T. Bohdanska (2), N. Kotowych, conductor-teacher B. Wolanska, and pianist-teacher M. Lonchyna-Lisowsky.

In its circa 70 years of activity UMI has united hundreds of professional musicians and enabled thousands of students to study Ukrainian and world music literature. The 12-year program consists of Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced levels, primary and secondary subjects, jury examinations, student and diploma recitals, thematic soirees, concerts by outstanding students, faculty, alumni, and professional guest artists.

Some branches of UMI have had pre-schools, children’s choirs, orchestras, opera and dance ensembles. The Institute has published a number of materials and recordings, including courses in music history and theory that have become part of the teaching program in Ukraine. A number of former UMI students have achieved recognition in the world of music, and some alumni are teaching in UMI branches.

UMI has ties with American music circles: students take part in state and national competitions, often achieving high marks with Ukrainian repertoire. By their efforts and through the concert repertoire of actively performing teachers, Ukrainian music is heard at elite halls like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Academy of Music, in colleges and universities, on radio, television, and recordings. Український Музичний Інститут Америки, Інк. (УМІ) – найбільша й найстарша професійна, неприбуткова музична школа української діяспори. Заснована 1952 р. в Ню Йорку, в різні часи поширилася по 23 містах США. Ця мережа філіялів створена на зразок Вищого музичного інституту ім. Лисенка у Західній Україні, де члени засновного складу УМІ викладали в 30-их роках. Їх імена, це перелік визначних діяспорних музикантів 20-го ст.

Співзасновник, організатор, та перший директор і інспектор УМІ – піяніст-педагог Роман Савицький, старший. Далі президентами стали: композитори-музикознавці І. Соневицький, З. Лисько, піяністи-педагоги Д. Гординська-Каранович (3), М. Байлова, Т. Богданська (2), Н. Котович, дириґент-педагог Б. Волянська, і піяніст-педагог М. Лончина-Лісовська. Протягом около 70 років праці, УМІ згуртував сотні професійних музикантів та уможливив тисячам учнів вивчати українську й світову музичну літературу.

Програма УМІ на 12 років складається з Нижчого, Середнього, й Вищого курсів, головних і побічних предметів, іспитів перед жюрі, учнівських і дипломових виступів, тематичних вечорів, концертів визначних учнів, учителів, ґрадуантів, і професійних гостей.

При деяких відділах діяли музичні садочки, дитячі хори, оркестри, оперні й балетні ансамблі. Видавнича праця УМІ здійснила ряд публікацій та музикозаписів, включно з курсами музичної історії й теорії, які сьогодні входять у навчальну програму України. З колишніх студентів УМІ деякі визначаються в американському музичному світі, деякі викладають по відділах.

УМІ тримає зв’язки з американськими музичними колами: учні беруть участь у стейтових і національних конкурсах, часто здобувають високі оцінки з українським репертуаром. Завдяки цим учням та українському репертуарові концертуючих учителів, українська музика звучить в елітарних залях, як Карнеґі Гол, Линколн Центр, Кенеді Центр, Академія Музики, по коледжах і університетах, по радіо, телебаченню, і звукозаписах.
